About Delta
Biodiversity:
An exotic landscape with over 1,200 species of trees and plants, with the richest ornithological fauna on the continent (more than 300 species, among which unique colonies of pelicans) and
ichthyologic fauna (with around 100 species, from the Danube herrings to the sturgeons which produce the precious caviar).
The zone:
The Danube Delta looks like an equilateral triangle with some 80 km long side. The water temperature (13:00 hours): June 20° July, August 22°, September 18°.
The fishes:
Some 150 species are known, including 30 in the Delta proper. In the Danube arms, common presence are the sterlet, great bleak, beluga, Black Sea sturgeon, sevruga, mackerel, carp, sheat fish, zander, pike, barbel, rapacious carp; the still water is fit place to live in for crucian, perch, bream, the water with low salinity is populated by various species from perch and pike to grey mullet and flounder, depending on the salinity degree, the sea sector shelters mostly Acipenserides (beluga, common sturgeon) and Clupeidae
(Danube mackerel). The fame of the Delta is made by the sturgeons (beluga, common sturgeon, sevruga, sterlet), grey mullets (in four species of the Mugil genus), the mackerels (Alosa pontica). |

The Danube Delta -
A UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site
The waters of the Danube, which flow into the Black Sea, form the
largest and best preserved of Europe's deltas - The Danube Delta
(Delta Dunarii).
The Danube Delta was included in the UNESCO Project as a Reservation
of the Biosphere because its peculiar features and the originality
and variety of the ecosystems (more than 25 types of natural ecosystems).
There are settled 16 areas strictly protected where no economical
activities are allowed, then areas for ecological rehabilitation
and buffer and economical areas, where tourist activities are permitted
under the circumstances of protection and maintenance of the environment.
The Danube Delta is home to more than 300 migratory and permanent
bird species; 160 kinds of fish that include caviar-bearing sturgeon
and 800 plant families. This wetlands preserve covers more than
1,678,000 acres (2,622 sq. miles) comprising channels and canals
widening into tree-fringed lakes, reed islands, numerous lakes and
marshes, oak forests intertwined with lianas and creepers, desert
dunes and traditional fishermen villages.
